Head black, hairs of back of crown light brownish- ochreous, eyes large, nearly approximated above. Palpi with very long hairs, externally blackish, internally whitish. Head rosy-grey-whitish. Palpi stouter than in semicoccinea, ochreous-whitish, terminal joint with incomplete basal and submedian blackish rings and sharp subapical band. Antennae whitish ringed blackish, a blackish band at |, above this whitish with two slender blackish bands. Thorax reddish-orange, four pale greyish stripes. Abdomen greyish, two basal segments pale ochreous. Posterior tibiae above with orange streak and whitish-oclireous hairs. Porewings basal (larger) half vermilion- red, four blue-grey streaks, first zigzag from base of costa to near dorsum about |, second zigzag from costa near base obliquely to fold, thence along fold to near middle and bent up to meet apex of third, third from or near fourth near origin above middle to edge of red area, fourth costal from ^ to middle, its extreme costal edge whitish ; a grey-whitish dorsal streak speckled blackish from near base to near edge of red area, connected by slight whitish-grey bars with second grey streak at its middle and near extremity ; posterior area pale ochreous, a fine dash projecting into third grey streak, on dorsal half a pale golden-metallic bar separating the colours with a slender discal projection to tornus and followed in disc by a minute black dot, on costa minute black dots surrounded whitish just beyond red area and at § : cilia pale ochreous. Hindwings and cilia light grey, cilia above apex suffused ochreous-whitish. Porewings . 11-12 mm. Head pale ochreous, face white, eyes crimson. Palpi ochreous, anterior edge of terminal joint and a subapical ring blackish, tip white. Thorax pale silvery-grey, an orange-red longi¬ tudinal mark anteriorly on each side of back (sometimes obsolete ?), an expansible pencil of long whitish hairs lying beneath forewings. Abdomen silvery-whitish. Forewings basal (larger) half orange- red, five light grey-violet-blue streaks, fir-t from base along dorsum to middle of wing, second from base of fold running into first before extremity, third from base of costa rather irregular and thence along fold and turned up at apex to join apex of fourth, fourth out of fifth near anterior extremity, then above middle to end of red area, fifth along costa from J to end of red area ; posterior area light pinkish-oohreous, at anterior edge a black whitish-circled costal dot and a silvery dorsal spot surmounted by a black dot, a small black mark on costa at f edged anteriorly white and posteriorly by a wedgeshaped spot of white suffusion, beyond this at tornus a small spot of silvery-whitish suffusion sometimes accompanied by one or two black scales : cilia pale bronzy-ochreous, towards tornus greyish. Forewings basal -| deep orange, four whitish-blue-grey streaks, first along fold from base almost to edge of orange area, turned up at tip to meet third, second rather irregular from costa near base to middle of first, third from above end of second to edge of orange area, fourth costal from 1 to edge of orange area, its extreme costal edge whitish; an irregular grey-whitish dorsal streak from base to near edge of orange area, connected by some whitish suffusion with plical streak at ( of wing; posterior area pale ochreous, a fin e dash projecting into third grey streak, a silver-metallic mark surmounted by a blackish dot on dorsum separating the two colours and a smell silver-metallic spot on termen nearer to this than to apex, on costa short blackish transverse marks surrounded white just beyond orange area and at § : cilia pale ochreous. Forewings 3 beneath with small greyish-fulvous glandular dorsal spot between veins 3 and 4. Queensland, Cairns, September to .November (Dodd); 3 ex. In semico xinea Staint. (with which I had hitherto erroneously confounded this species and clyttinnestra) the 3 has a long expan¬ sible pencil of ochreous-yellowish hairs from metathorax lying along each side of abdomen ; in the allied molybdaula the 3 has a long expansible pencil of fine whitish hairs projecting from meso thorax above hind wings ; neither of these two species has yet been found in the Australian region. Labdia microdictyas, n. sp. 9 . 7 mm. Head, thorax white. Palpi white, subapical ring of second joint and submedian and subapical rings of terminal joint grey. Abdomen whitish, two basal segments pale ochreous. Fore¬ wings anterior -| reddish- orange, with iridescent pale violet-grey markings, viz., a broad irregular streak along dorsum to middle, at base extending to costa, an oblique streak from costa at -4 running into this, and an oblique very irregular streak from costa before middle to edge of orange area, where it is slenderly connected with apex of dorsal streak ; orange area limited by a slender silvery- whitish somewhat oblique streak edged posteriorly with some black scales except in middle : posterior area yellow-ochreous, including an undefined blotch of blue-whitish suffusion resting on costa, preceded on costa and followed on torn us by small dots of black irroration : cilia whitish. Forewings dark brown- grey ; an irregular white dorsal stripe from base to tornus, in 9 greyish-tinged, irregularly expanded beyond middle, including an elongate blackish mark on dorsum in middle ; in 3 a more or less developed irregular streak of white suffusion along costa from near base to near apex, interrupted in middle, in 9 reduced to a pos¬ terior spot, a black mark beneath this just before apex ; a rather large black dot partly white-circled, resting on edge of dorsal streak beyond middle of wing, and a similar dot in disc near beyond it (second discal stigma) ; along tennen a series of several dark dots surrounded white and edged anteriorly by a fine white streak: cilia light grey, towards tips whitish, round apex a dark grey sabbasal COSMOPTERYGlD JE. 59 shade. Forewings pale pinkish ; a dark grey basal patch occupying -t of wing, including a spot of ground¬ colour below fold ; separated from this by a narrow space, in middle of which is some dark grey suffusion, is a rather broad dark grey postmedian fascia, oatwards-oblique from dorsum, on middle of its anterior edge a large blackish dot white-circled above (first discal stigma); a rather broad dark grey streak along termen, tending to be connected with preceding by three or four narrow bars of dark grey irroration, on middle of anterior edge of this a large black dot (second discal stigma), on costal preceded by a slight white mark : cilia light grey, round apex pale pinkish, at apex a short blackish basal bar with projections at extremities, before apex a small blackish-grey spot. Elachista putris, n. sp. ots or transverse strigulse, two spots beyond middle of costa somewhat larger; a moderate oval grey spot in disc at |, and a crescentic bar before apex : cilia whitish, on costa barred dark grey irroration, on termen with less distinct bars on basal half. Forewings light yellow- ochreous ; basal area much mixed blackish-grey ; six spots on segment 1 formed by blackish costal suffusion edged laterally white, third extended across seg¬ ment and extended on its lower margin ; segments 2-6 basally irrorated blackish-grey, then with median and posterior fasciae edged first with blackish-grey irroration and then with white, median fascia nearly straight, narrowest on segment 4, posterior fascia rather narrow and near termen on segments 2 and 5, much wider and retracted on segments 3 and 4, rather narrow and retracted on segment 6, all segments with apical white dots edged dark grey anteriorly : cilia whitish barred grey, on fasciae dark grey. Hindwings whitish -yellowish ; basal area irregularly marked blackish; a rather narrow irregular median fascia of grey irroration, edged on each side with white blackish-edged bars ; a rather narrow posterior pale grey-yellowish fascia edged with white bars margined blackish-grey, retracted on segments 1, 3, and 6 ; apical dots and cilia as in forewings. Tibet, Tay-Tou-Ho ; 1 ex. (Coll. Paravicini). Forewings almost exactly as in the Indian spilodesma , but hindwings and palpi different. ORNEODIDiE. 539 HEBDOMACTIS, n. g. Head with loosely appressed scales, collar forming a hood of long rough hairs projecting over crown ; ocelli posterior ; tongue imperceptible, scales rough round mouth. Antennae §, cf mode¬ rately ciliated, scape moderate, with dense anterior apical projection of scales. Labial palpi moderate, straight, porrected, second joint loosely scaled, terminal joint somewhat shorter, pointed. Maxillary palpi very short, loosely scaled, porrected. Anterior tibiae very short, r tarsi thrice as long, posterior tibiae shortly rough-scaled above, tarsi about as long. Forewings cleft from middle into six linear plumes, second cleft slightly deeper than others ; 2 from middle of cell, running to segment 6, 3 from | to segment 5, 4 and 5 connate from angle to segments 4 and 3, 6 from near upper angle to segment 2, 7 to apex, 8-10 out of 7, 11 from near upper angle. Hindwings cleft from about ^ into seven linear plumes, first and third clefts rather deeper ; 1 6 to segment 7, 1 a to sixth cleft, 2 absent, 3 from near middle to segment 6, 4 and 5 from angle to segments 5 and 4, 6 and 7 from upper angle to segments 3 and 2, 8 to segment 1. This curious genus has all the facies of an Orneocles, but is obviously much more primitive in structure. In Triscaedecia veins 9 and 10 of forewings, as well as 11, rise from cell before 7, as stated by Hampson ; I have verified this. Hebdomactis crystallodes, n. sp. c? • 14 mm. Head white mixed grey. Hindwings snow-white ; basal area to clefts suffused fuscous ; a light greyish streak crossing wing at |, and a series of light greyish bars on segments towards apex ; cilia white, except on streak. Nearest to Triscaeclecia , and implying an earlier form more primitive than either. Hexeretmis argo, n. sp. d . 36 mm. Head pale ochreous. Palpi ochreous- whitish, second joint suffused reddish-ochreous above, especially towards middle. Thorax pale ochreous, a transverse median band of irre¬ gular fuscous suffusion. Abdomen whitish-ochreous, segments 2-4 ferruginous-brown. Fore wings whitish-ochreous, some irregular brownish-yellow suffusion beneath costa throughout, a dorsal stripe and terminal third of wing tinged brownish-ochreous ; a blotch of brown suffusion in middle of base ; costal edge blackish on two anterior longer and four posterior shorter spaces, at each end of these slight whitish suffusion ; discal stigmata small, dark fuscous ; a slightly curved transverse suffused dark brown streak at § not reaching costa, tending to be broken into lunulate spots, connected in middle by a dark brown blotch with base of third cleft ; a dark fuscous dot on base of each cleft ; minute black dots indicated on sides of each lobe towards apex, these larger and darker on edges of third cleft : cilia pale ochreous, with slight indications of bars of fuscous mixture. Hindwings whitish-ochreous, lobes tinged brownish-ochreous ; a moderately broad dark brown fascia at narrowed upwards ; a dark fuscous discal dot before middle ; a slightly curved waved fuscous transverse line at -| ; dark fuscous marks at base of clefts, and a spot on costa in line with these ; distinct dark fuscous dots on each side of lobes towards apex ; cilia as in forewings, dorsal cilia long and dense, pale ochreous. Bihak, Pusa, bred October from larvae mining leaves of Oclinci ivodier (A.nacardiacece) ( Bangi ); pupa-case oval, violet-brown, with three short white silken projections on one side of the mouth and four on the other ; 1 ex. Forewings moderate, rather dilated, costa moderately arched, apex rounded, termen rounded, little oblique ; violet-ochreous-brownish ; a rather broad irregular pale clear yellow streak suffused into groundcolour extending from base, where it reaches dorsum, along costa to apex and attenuated along termen to below middle, widest on costa in middle ; a blackish line from costa near base reaching more than half across wing ; second discal stigma forming a small transverse blackish-grey spot ; a blackish-grey mark on costa at |, whence a hardly perceptibly darker shade of groundcolour strongly sinuate outwards in disc and then strongly inwards beneath second discal stigma runs to a similar mark on dorsum near tornus, preceded on lower by a fascia of more yellow-ochreous suffusion : cilia pale clear yellow, on tornal area dark grey. Head dark fuscous, face and sides of collar white. Palpi dark purple-fuscous, base and tip of terminal joint white. Thorax dark purple-fuscous, a posterior orange spot. Forewings rather broad, suboblong, costa anteriorly strongly, posteriorly slightly arched, apex rounded, termen obliquely rounded ; 7 and 8 coincident ; orange ; markings deep fuscous-purple ; an elongate- triangular blotch on base of costa (apex anterior), and a median streak from base to \ ; a hemispherical blotch on costa beyond i, four inwards-oblique transverse blotches between this and apex, one at apex, and five from termen, last small, tornal, costal and upper part of terminal margin between these rather narrowly suffused white ; nine small cloudy spots, viz. one (or two) towards dorsum about two elongate almost dorsal posteriori}, five arranged in a circle in disc, and one larger beyond these towards apex : cilia bronzy-fuscous, basal half suffused purple. Hindwings orange ; a narrow purplish-fuscous terminal streak, cut by orange lines on veins; cilia orange, basal third fuscous except on veins. Colombia, R. Aguacatal, 6600 feet ; 1 ex. (Coll. The coincidence of veins 7 and 8 of forewings is abnormal in the genus, but the species is so nearly allied to cupreata that it should not be separated generically. tECornoniD^. 577 Hypercallia euthyrsa, n. sp. Forewings suboblong, costa anteriorly strongly, posteriorly gently arched, notched at |, apex obtuse, termen faintly sinuate, vertical ; 9 separate ; reddish-purple-fuscous, on basal | speckled whitish, towards base sprinkled dark fuscous ; some irregular ferruginous-ochreous suffusion towards costa beyond middle, and before apex; a minute white dot on lower angle of cell: cilia ferruginous-fuscous speckled whitish-grey. Having obtained an example of the typical species roseoviridis Wals. for study, I find that the genus, which on the faith of the characters given by Lord Walsingham and Hr. Durrant I had merged in Cryptolechia, is really distinct, as veins 7 and 8 of hind- wings are connected by an oblique bar (not noticed by them), and is therefore nearly allied to Ccdliphrcictis, Epiphractis, and Orygo- cera, an interesting African group, all showing this same structure ; it differs from Epiphractis by the stalking of 2 and 3 of forewings, from Calliphractis by the absence of thoracic crest, from Orygocera by the presence of vein 1 1 in 22- xylomorpba, 498. xyloplxragma, 307.
